This is how a Fire System works in an aircraft hangar

In Ruhrpumpen Fire Division our goal is to protect lives and goods from our customers all around the world.

By regulation (NFPA 11), aircraft hangars are required to use a foam fire suppression system to extinguish a fire correctly and in a timely manner.

Foam fire suppression systems extinguish a fire by cooling and separating fuel from oxygen. In more technical terms, the systems are used to “cool the fire and coat the fuel that the fire consumes to prevent contact with oxygen and reduce any combustion ability.

Although Ruhrpumpen does not manufacture foam suppression systems, our fire pumps are crucial to the operation of these systems because without water, their operation would be impossible.

It is important to point out that a foam suppression system is made up of foam concentrate, water, and air that mixes to create a blanket of foam that protects the flammable fuel from combusting.

In this edition of our monthly newsletter, we want to show you how a foam system works and there is nothing better to do so than the pictures of the latest tests carried out by one of our business partners.

Did you know that...

America’s deadliest fire took place April 27, 1865, aboard the steamship Sultana. Among other passengers were 1,500 recently released Union prisoners traveling home up the Mississippi when the boilers exploded. The ship was six times over capacity, which helps explain the death toll of 1,547.
